Flexion Distraction

Flexion Distraction Technique

Flexion Distraction, often called the Cox Technic, is a gentle, non-surgical chiropractic adjustment technique designed to treat disc injuries and lower back pain. Unlike traditional high-velocity adjustments that involve quick popping or cracking, flexion distraction is a low-force, rhythmic stretching procedure.

How It Works

The procedure requires a specialized Cox Table that has a movable lower section.

  • The Setup: You lie face-down on the table. Your ankles are often secured to provide stable leverage.
  • The Motion: The chiropractor places one hand on the specific spinal segment being treated. With the other hand, they operate the table to move the lower half of your body in a slow, rhythmic downward motion.
  • The Decompression: This combination of manual pressure and table movement creates negative pressure within the spinal discs.

The Mechanical Benefits

  • Disc Rehydration: Negative pressure helps draw herniated or bulging disc material back toward the center of the disc.
  • Nerve Decompression: It widens the spinal canal and intervertebral foramen, reducing nerve pressure and inflammation.
  • Improved Mobility: The rhythmic motion helps break up scar tissue and adhesions, restoring natural range of motion.

Common Conditions Treated

Flexion distraction is often used for patients who cannot tolerate traditional adjustments or who want to avoid surgery.

  • Disc herniations and bulges
  • Sciatica
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Failed back surgery syndrome

Safety and Considerations

Because it is a gentle technique, flexion distraction is appropriate for a wide range of patients, including seniors and those experiencing acute pain.
