Bone Broth.  Whenever I mention those words to a patient for the very first time, the look that I receive is usually not very pleasant.   Nothing a thorough explanation can’t fix.  In fact, the health benefits that come with consuming bone broth on a regular basis exceedingly outweigh the stigma attached to the name. 

Bone broth is the best way to obtain essential minerals, amino acids and more specifically, collagen, which is the major component and building block of our bones, skin, ligaments, cartilage and tendons.  Collagen is what helps to maintain youthful looking skin, well-supported and lubricated joints, and flexibility.  In addition, more and more research is discovering the benefits that bone broth has on the digestive tract and intestinal health.  Gelatin, which is the broken down compound of collagen, has been shown to help heal damaged tissue of the digestive tract from conditions such as acid reflux, Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis, and IBS.  It also has been shown to potentially heal damaged tissue caused by leaky gut syndrome, further decreasing inflammation in the body linked to certain autoimmune conditions and food sensitivities.  And since a large portion of the immune system stems from the digestive tract, a healthy gut equals a healthy immune system!
